It is in the interests of any parent to see their children grow up to healthy and strong, but they’re not going to be able to do it on their own, they will need your help and guidance along the way.
There are many positive habits your child into at an early age, but you have to set the foundations and make sure that they stick to them; otherwise your child could lose focus and succumb to a life dominated by sugary and fatty foods.
It is important also to ensure that children are growing up in a positive environment too. If, for example, someone in the home is smoker, encourage them to stop or at least take a look at e-cig starter packs and make the switch to cheap electronic cigarettes. Even elements such as arguments and visual stress can upset a child and harm them mentally, but there are some examples of habits to enforce:
Healthy eating
It’s not just adults that can be affected by the likes of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, kids can be too, so you need to make sure that they are eating the correct foods and that their plates at dinner time are at least half-full with vegetables, for example.
Things like drinking water instead of sugary juice or fizzy drinks are vital, not least for nutritional reasons, but also so their teeth aren’t ruined by the time they are 10-years-old. Encouraging the consumption of fruit and fat-free milk is also advised and over sized potions are a no no.
Getting active
Physical activity should be a staple in a child’s life, as it helps build muscles and bones, develop vital motor skills and improve their immune system, believe it or not. As a person gets older, they find it harder to exercise if they have not participated in at least one form of it since childhood.
As a result of a lack of exercise, children can suffer from an unhealthy body weight, which over time will increase their blood pressure, as well as convey a poor body image which in turn can decrease confidence levels.
Having sufficient amounts of sleep
This is perhaps an area that is most important to very small children, but in effect it is relevant to everybody and getting the right amount of sleep is vital for us to be able to develop and operate properly as a human being.
Without a healthy and regular sleep pattern, children can succumb to obesity, hypertension, mood swings and poor school performance. Those with children under a year old need to make sure their kids are getting at least 12 hours sleep, whilst children between the ages of five and 12 need to be getting between nine and 10 hours.
